Why God Lets Unity Fail Before He Lets It Win
One of the hardest things in life is failure. We fail. Other people fail us. And the sting goes deeper when we expected to win, especially when we were doing something good, even something God asked us to do.
That last one confuses a lot of believers. If God promised the victory, why does the road there run straight through defeat? Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that this is not a glitch in the Christian life. It is part of how God grows people. There is a real test of unity, and walking through it sometimes means walking through failure first.
What "Victory in Christ" Actually Promises
Scripture is direct about who wins in the end.
“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57)”
That is settled. The trouble is that many people read it as a promise of a smooth ride, and then the first hard loss makes them wonder if God lied. He did not. The victory is guaranteed. The path to it still has valleys in it.
Bride Ministries' framework holds that God will lead His people through seasons of failure on purpose. Not because He enjoys watching them hurt, but because there is something inside them He wants to remove. That something is fear.
Fear Is the Enemy of Faith
Here is the engine of the whole teaching. You cannot walk into the fullness of what God has for you while fear is running the show. The Bible ties faith and fear to the same root, which is love.
“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. (Galatians 5:6)”
Faith runs on love. And love is exactly what pushes fear out.
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18)”
Daniel Duval often uses a plain picture to hold these pieces together. Think of your inner life as a car he calls the Faith Mobile. Love is the engine. Faith is the car. Fear is the long list of things that can break down under the hood. Some breakdowns are small, like a blown fuse. Some are major, like a cracked engine block. A small problem slows you down. A big one leaves you stranded on the side of the road, looking for some other way to get where you were going.
When fear is in the engine, faith stalls. You can talk about moving mountains all you want, but a car with no oil and a busted engine is not driving across the country. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed moves mountains (Matthew 17:20). That kind of faith needs a love-engine that runs clean, with the fear taken out.
So God works on the engine. He removes the fear. And the most effective way He does that is rarely comfortable.
Why God Lets You Face the Worst Case
The fastest way God pulls fear out of a person is to walk them straight into the thing they were afraid of, and then show them they survived it. He lets them taste a measure of failure so the fear loses its grip.
Daniel often points to how trapeze artists are trained. Before they ever learn a single trick high in the air, they learn one thing first: how to fall. The net goes up, they swing out, and they let go. They fall on purpose, over and over, until falling stops being scary. Once the worst case has no power over them, they can do things in midair that would freeze anyone else solid. The fear had to go before the skill could come.
God does something similar with His people. He lets the worst case happen, walks them through it, and shows them His hand was under them the whole time.
A Warning Before We Go Further
This teaching is easy to twist, so it needs a clear guardrail. "God lets us fail to remove fear" does NOT mean God arranged the abuse, the betrayal, or the evil done to you. Bride Ministries teaches that suffering comes from more than one source. There is the kind that refines and matures us, and there is the kind that comes from other people's evil choices, which is never God's will. The first is a fire God uses for good. The second is a wound God grieves with you and works to heal.
So if you have been deeply hurt by someone, please do not read this and conclude that God set it up. He did not. What He does is meet you in the rubble and use even that to drive the fear out and grow your faith. The wound was not from Him. The healing is.
Israel's Painful Lesson on Unity
There is a strange story in the book of Judges that shows this pattern at a national level. After a horrific crime in the town of Gibeah (Judges 19), something rare happened. The scattered tribes of Israel came together as one for a single purpose: to bring justice (Judges 20:1). For the first time in years, they were unified, and for a good cause.
Then God let them lose.
Twice the unified tribes asked God whether to go up and fight, and twice He told them to go (Judges 20:18, 20:23). Both times they obeyed and were beaten badly (Judges 20:21, 20:25). They had not missed God. He personally sent them in, and they still lost. Only on the third attempt did God hand the victory over.
What was God doing? Bride Ministries' reading is that He was removing their fear. He took a freshly unified people through the worst case, two crushing defeats, so that when the win came, fear would not be steering anymore. Their unity was being tested and refined, not punished.
Unity Gets Tested After It Forms
This is the part most people miss. Coming together is not the finish line. It is the starting line.
Unity is not an end in itself. The works that unity makes possible are what God is after. So once He brings people together, He tests their resolve. He proves whether the unity will hold under pressure or crack at the first defeat. A unity that has never been tested has never been proven.
This matters for the church right now. Scripture points to a coming day when the body of Christ walks in a maturity and oneness it has not yet reached. Jesus Himself prayed for it the night before the cross.
“that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. (John 17:21)”
Notice what hangs on it: the world believing. The stakes are enormous. So as believers begin to come together, they should expect the test, not be shocked by it. The defeats along the way are not proof the unity was fake. They are how it gets refined into something that can actually carry the weight of the works God has waiting. If you want to see who this unified people is being built into, Bride Movement breaks it down in Zion, New Jerusalem, and Living Stones Explained.
When the Fear Runs Deeper Than a Hard Season
For some people, fear is not just a passing feeling tied to one setback. It was installed early, often through real pain, and it does not lift just because the season changes. That kind of fear sits deeper, and it can quietly run the engine for years.
That is not a failure of faith. It is a sign of something that needs gentle, deeper healing, and it was never meant to be carried alone. The free prayer resources in the Bride Ministries Prayer Library are a good first step, and for fear that has roots, there is a path that goes further. Bride Movement built a free healing assessment for exactly this. It takes about two minutes, it is private, and it points you toward the next step. The valley is real, but it was never meant to be the destination.
