The Love of God Is Not Something You Try Harder to Feel
A lot of believers hear the words "love one another" and feel a quiet pressure inside. They think it means they need to dig down and be more patient, kinder, more generous, more forgiving. So they grit their teeth and try. And when the love does not come, they feel like they are failing at the one thing Jesus asked them to do.
Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that this whole approach is built on a misunderstanding. The love of God is not something you squeeze out of yourself by effort. It is a force you receive from God and let flow through you. Once you see that, the pressure changes into something far better.
This is the first of three articles working through what the apostle John taught about love.
A Different Kind of Love
John is sometimes called the apostle of love, because love runs through everything he wrote. But there is one thing you have to know before any of it makes sense.
When John writes "love," he is not talking about human love. In the original Greek language, his word is almost always agape. That word means the love of God Himself. There were other Greek words John could have used for human affection or friendship, and he chose not to. So every time he says love, he means a specific thing: the love that comes from God.
This matters because the two are not the same size. Human love runs out. It plays favorites. It keeps score and it gets tired. The love of God does none of that. Daniel Duval teaches that agape is the most powerful force available from God's kingdom, and that it is impossible to fake or produce on your own. You can copy its manners. You cannot manufacture its substance.
Where This Love Actually Comes From
So if you cannot make this love yourself, where do you get it?
Jesus pointed to the answer in a surprising place. When people asked where the kingdom of God was, He did not point to the sky.
“nor will they say, 'See here!' or 'See there!' For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:21)”
Daniel Duval teaches that the kingdom of God is not a faraway place out in space. It is a realm that overlaps the world we can see, and the way into it is through the human heart. God is Spirit, and the love that flows from His kingdom is spiritual.
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:24)”
Put those two ideas together and you get the picture. The love of God comes from God's realm, it is already placed inside a believer when they come to Christ, and it reaches the people around you by flowing out through your heart. You are not the power plant. You are the pipe.
What the Heart Has to Do With It
In Bride Ministries' framework, the heart is far more than a place where feelings happen. Daniel Duval teaches that the heart is the meeting point inside a person where the soul (your mind, your will, your emotions) connects with the spirit, the part of you that touches God. The Bible describes the heart as the place where the deepest things in a person get sorted out.
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)”
Another way to say it: the heart is like the subconscious, the deep part of you that runs in the background and shapes how you actually respond to life. It is the center of who you are.
Here is why that is the key to this whole teaching. The love of God is in you. But your heart decides how much of it gets through. Daniel Duval describes the heart's condition as either an open door, a filter, or in some cases a brick wall. When the heart is open, God's love pours out of a person freely. When the heart is wounded and guarded, that same love is still there, but it is trapped behind walls that life and pain built up over the years.
This is why two believers can both have the love of God inside them, and one overflows with it while the other stays cold and stuck. It is not that one has the love and the other does not. It is that one heart is open and the other is walled off.
Why You Already Love Other Christians, Even When It Does Not Feel Like It
John makes a claim that sounds almost too strong.
“Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. (1 John 5:1-2)”
Read slowly, that says something striking. The moment a person truly believes in Jesus, they are born again, and the love of God is in them. And because that love is in them, they already love other believers, whether they feel it or not. John says this is actually one of the marks that the love is really there.
Daniel Duval is honest about the gap between that truth and everyday experience. Plenty of Christians have felt unloved by other Christians. Plenty have never once felt the full, unguarded love of God come at them through another person. The reason is not that the love is missing. The reason is that walls in the heart are blocking it.
The good news is that walls can come down. Daniel Duval teaches that this is exactly why inner healing matters. When God heals the wounded places in a person's heart, the door swings open, and the love that was always inside finally flows. The work is not to generate love. The work is to let God clear out whatever is damming it up.
Love Is Your Real Identity
There is one more turn in this teaching, and it is the most freeing part.
Because the love of God lives in a believer, love is not just something they do. It is who they are. Daniel Duval teaches that the enemy's strategy is sneaky: first he convinces you to block the flow of God's love behind your hurts and your defenses, and then he convinces you that the love was never there in the first place. So you end up feeling like a failure at love, when the truth is you are a person carrying an ocean of it behind a wall.
The honest reading of John lands on a hopeful note. Your identity is love, because the One who is love lives in you.
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (1 John 4:7-8)”
So the path forward is not striving harder. It is letting God heal the heart so the love already inside can come out. For many people, those walls were built early, through wounds that were never their fault, and they do not come down just by knowing better. That is not weakness. It is a sign that something tender needs gentle, deeper healing, and it was never meant to be carried alone. Bride Movement built a free healing assessment for exactly this. It takes about two minutes, it is private, and it points you toward the next step.
The next article in this series looks at why a believer's true nature, deep down, is actually unable to hate.
