Receive God's Love: Stop Trying to Generate It

You cannot manufacture God's love by trying harder. Learn why agape must be received from its source and how to let it flow through you to others.

You Cannot Manufacture God's Love. Here Is What Works Instead

Most people have tried, at least once, to love someone they could not stand. They gritted their teeth, forced a smile, and pushed themselves to be kind. For a day or two it held. Then the person did the thing again, and the whole effort collapsed.

Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that this is exactly what happens when we try to love people out of our own strength. It does not work, and it was never supposed to. The love God asks us to carry is not a feeling we crank up. It is a love we receive from Him and then let flow through us to others.

Two Kinds of Love, and Only One of Them Is Free

When the Bible talks about the love God calls us to, it is not talking about ordinary human affection. The word used again and again is agape, which simply means the love of God Himself. It is a different kind of love than the warm feeling you have for a close friend or a favorite meal.

Bride Ministries' teaching on this is direct: agape cannot be made by a human being. You cannot generate it through willpower, and you cannot fake a convincing copy of it. It comes from God, and it has to come into the world through people who first receive it. That single idea changes everything about how a person tries to love.

The apostle Paul says it plainly when he describes how this love reaches us:

“Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:5)”

Notice the direction. The love of God is poured into us by the Holy Spirit. It does not start with us and travel up to God. It starts with God and is placed inside us. Our part is to receive it and let it move.

Why Trying Harder Backfires

Picture a hamster in its cage. It climbs onto its little wheel and runs. The wheel spins fast, the hamster works hard, and it goes absolutely nowhere. Nothing is built. Nothing is produced. As long as the wheel is turning, it all feels productive, but there is no destination at the end of all that motion.

Daniel Duval uses this picture for a believer who is trying to love people by self-effort. The effort is real. The exhaustion is real. The result is the spinning wheel. The Bible has a word for living the Christian life out of our own strength instead of God's: carnal, which just means run by the flesh rather than the Spirit.

“And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:1)”

Here is the trap that keeps so many sincere people stuck. They read the high standard the Bible sets for love, they try to reach it on their own, they fail, and they decide the standard must be impossible or that something is wrong with them. Neither is true. The standard is real, and it is fully reachable. It is just not reachable the way they have been trying.

The Gardener Who Watered with Soda

Daniel Duval tells the story another way, with a gardener.

A man has a garden that needs water. In the picture, the garden stands for the lives of the people around him, and the water stands for the love of God those people need. Attached to his house is a hose, and that hose runs back to a reservoir so large it never runs dry. The hose is his connection to God, where this love is always flowing and always available.

So what does the gardener do? He ignores the hose. He walks several miles to the store, pays a little over a dollar for a can of soda, walks all the way back, and tries to water the entire garden with that one can.

It is a ridiculous picture on purpose. The can of soda is a stand-in for self-effort, a tiny, store-bought substitute for something God offers for free in unlimited supply. You cannot water a whole garden with a can of soda, and you cannot love a whole life full of people out of your own small reserves. The supply is too thin and the need is too big.

The point lands hard for anyone who has run themselves dry caring for others: the answer was never to squeeze more out of yourself. The answer was to turn on the hose.

How the Love Actually Flows Through You

So how does a person turn on the hose? The Bible points to the Holy Spirit.

“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, (Ephesians 5:18)”

To be filled with the Spirit is to keep coming back to God and letting Him fill you up, the way you keep a hose connected so the water keeps coming. The love does not get used up, because it is not yours to begin with. It is God's, moving through you.

Daniel Duval describes the shift like this. Instead of straining to produce a few drops of love for the people in your life, you let God's love pour over you first until you are soaked in it, your clothes and hair and shoes all dripping. Then you turn and let that same flow hit everyone around you. The garden does not get a careful sprinkle. It gets drenched.

This is also why Scripture can describe love as fruit rather than effort. Fruit is not manufactured by the branch. It grows naturally when the branch stays attached to the vine.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)”

There is one piece Bride Ministries adds that you will not find on most teaching about this, and it explains why some people stay stuck even after they understand the idea. The love of God flows from heaven, through the part of you that is joined to God in the unseen world, and into your heart. Your heart is the deeper, mostly hidden part of you, what many would call the subconscious, the place where your real beliefs live. If your heart is wounded or closed off, it can act like a kink in the hose. The water is there, the supply is endless, but it does not get through.

That is not a character flaw, and it is not a reason for shame. It is usually the result of real hurt that taught the heart to stay guarded. It is also the exact thing the inner healing work at Bride Ministries is built to address: getting the kink out of the hose so the love that was already there can finally flow.

Where to Start Today

You do not need a better strategy for loving difficult people. You need to be filled, and to let your heart be opened so what fills you can reach others.

A simple place to begin is to stop apologizing to God for not loving well, and instead start asking Him to fill you. The prayer resources in the Bride Ministries Prayer Library are free and walk you through receiving from God rather than performing for Him.

If you have tried for years and the love still seems blocked, that is worth paying attention to. A heart that cannot seem to let love in or out is often carrying something older than the present frustration. Bride Movement built a free healing assessment for exactly this. It takes about two minutes, it is private, and it points you toward the next step. Loving people the way God asks really is possible. It just starts with receiving, not with trying harder.
