The 9 Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Grace for Everyone

There is a quiet belief that runs through a lot of churches. It says the powerful stuff of God, the healings, the words spoken right on time, the sense of what is really going on in a room, belongs to a special class of people. The famous preacher. The gifted few. Everyone else watches from the seats.

Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that this belief is wrong, and that it quietly robs the whole body of Christ. The gifts of the Holy Spirit were given to every believer, not a handful of stars. They are not a reward for being holy enough. They are grace, the free favor and power of God, working through ordinary people.

This is part two of a closer look at how God designed His people to function together. In part one, the focus was on the three ways the Spirit shows up in a church. Here the focus narrows to one of those three: the gifts themselves.

Paul lists nine of them in one tight passage.

Every one of these is supernatural. None of them can be worked up by trying harder or studying more. They only happen when the Holy Spirit moves through a person. The Bible calls them "the manifestation of the Spirit," which simply means the Spirit becoming visible in something a person says or does.

Here is a plain definition of each, drawn from how Daniel Duval teaches them.

• Word of wisdom: knowing something about the future that you had no natural way to know, what will happen unless someone steps in to change it.
• Word of knowledge: knowing a fact about the past or present that you had no natural way to know, a detail held in the mind of God.
• Faith: a sudden, God-given ability to receive a miracle, far beyond your everyday level of trust.
• Gifts of healing: healing that comes through a person by the Spirit, apart from medicine or natural recovery.
• Working of miracles: the power to do something that nature cannot do on its own.
• Prophecy: speaking what God is saying right now, to build people up, urge them on, and bring comfort.
• Discerning of spirits: the ability to sense and learn what is happening in the unseen world, whether what is at work is from God, from a person, or from darkness.
• Tongues: speaking in a prayer language given by God, sometimes a real human language the speaker never learned.
• Interpretation of tongues: putting a message spoken in tongues into a language the room can understand.

Each of these is a doorway. When a believer is willing, the Holy Spirit can reach through that doorway and meet a real need in the room.

This is where most people get it backward. The passage ends with a line that settles the question.

Read the word "distributing." It does not say the Spirit hands one gift to one person and stops. The original word is plural. The Spirit spreads several gifts across each believer, and across the whole body, however He chooses. The verse just before it says the same thing from another angle: the Spirit is given "to each one for the profit of all" (1 Corinthians 12:7).

So the gifts are not parked in one famous person for everyone else to follow. They were meant to be everywhere, in the everyday believer praying with a coworker, in the quiet person who senses something is off and prays accordingly. Daniel Duval teaches that when thousands of ordinary believers start operating in even a measure of these gifts, the result is a community that strengthens itself from the inside. That is what real unity looks like in motion.

The word the Bible uses for "gifts" here is the Greek word charisma. It comes from the root word charis, which is where we get the English word grace. That root is not an accident. It tells you what the gifts actually are.

Most people think of grace as only one thing: God's unearned love and forgiveness. That is true, and it is the foundation. But Daniel Duval teaches that grace is also something more practical. Grace is God's ability at work in and through a person. The gifts are grace in action.

That changes everything about how you carry them. You do not qualify for a gift by being good enough, and you do not lose it by failing. Scripture is direct about this.

The older translations say the gifts are given "without repentance," meaning God does not change His mind and take them back. Once the Spirit gives a gift, it stays. A believer can step into it by faith whenever the moment calls for it. The pressure to perform falls away. You are not earning anything. You are stewarding something already placed in your hands, what Peter calls "the manifold grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10).

There is a lot of confusion about the gifts of the Spirit, and Daniel Duval is honest about why. Most of it comes from people teaching about something they have never personally seen or done.

He uses a picture to make the point. Imagine a ballet teacher who picks up a textbook on physics and tries to teach a physics class from it, having never solved a single problem. The class would fill up with ideas that do not work, and it would not even be entirely the teacher's fault. They were handed a manual for something they had never actually done.

These gifts are not abstract. Daniel Duval has described moments from his own ministry that show how concrete they can be.

In one account, he was praying for someone who kept feeling sharp pains in their body. The first round of prayer did not solve it. The second time, he leaned on the gift of discerning of spirits and began to see things in the unseen realm, images that pointed to old witchcraft still at work in the person's life from before they ever came to faith. As he named what he was seeing and broke its power in the name of Jesus, the pain stopped and did not come back.

In another, he was praying for a friend with chronic pain in an elbow and a knee. He felt led to declare that whatever he touched would be healed. When he laid his hand on the knee, he says he could feel the joint being rebuilt under the skin.

Daniel Duval frames the working of miracles this way: it is enforcing heaven's reality onto a broken situation, letting God replace what is wrong with the wholeness that already exists in heaven. That is why Scripture calls it the "working" of miracles and not the "believing for" miracles. One is faith reaching for something. The other is faith putting something into effect.
