Every Believer Has a Purpose: The Body of Christ

Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, likes to explain a big spiritual truth with a small everyday picture. The picture is a Lego set. Most of us have held one in our hands at some point, and it turns out a box of Lego bricks says something surprisingly deep about you, your purpose, and the people of God.

Stay with the picture for a minute. It will make the rest of this clear.

Think about a brand new Lego set. It comes in a colorful box with a picture on the front, a few bags of loose bricks inside, and a small instruction booklet. You open the bags, you follow the booklet step by step, and slowly the loose pieces become the exact thing shown on the front of the box. A plane. A spaceship. A whole little city.

Here is the part worth noticing. Not one of those bricks could become the picture on its own. A single brick is just a single brick. It only becomes part of something beautiful when it is joined to all the others, in the right place, doing the one job it was shaped for.

Daniel Duval teaches that this is exactly how God designed His people. The Bible says it plainly.

You are a piece. So is the person next to you. Every one of us has a purpose and a design built for that purpose. Some pieces look almost identical, and some look one of a kind, but they are all needed. Without the others, a single piece can never do what it was made to do. When all of us come together the right way, something shows up that no one of us could show on our own. The people of God, fit together, put Jesus on display.

Look closely at any Lego set and you will see the bricks are not all the same. Long ones, short ones, flat ones, oddly shaped ones. Each shape exists because the design needs that exact shape in that exact spot.

How successful would the Lego company be if every box held three hundred bricks that all looked exactly alike? It would be useless. You could not build anything. And yet a lot of churches accidentally try to do this with people. They press everyone into the same mold, reward the same few gifts, and quietly teach the rest to hide who they really are.

Daniel Duval teaches that God never meant for the church to produce copies of one kind of person. The Bible says God Himself placed each part where He wanted it.

That means your gifts, your personality, your way of seeing things, were not an accident or a problem to fix. They were placed. If you have ever felt like the odd-shaped piece that does not fit the church around you, that feeling may not be a sign that something is wrong with you. It may be a sign that you have not yet been put in the spot you were shaped for.

This is why no one should be left out. Imagine a Lego set that came with only half the pieces it needed, because every brick marked "female" had been pulled out of the box. The finished thing would be full of holes, and you would have to patch it with toothpicks and glue and whatever else you could find. Daniel Duval draws the lesson plainly: churches were never meant to be built on the gifts and callings of men only. He points to Junia, a woman who held the apostolic office in the early church.

That was no coincidence. She was not an exception slipped in by accident. She was a needed piece. Unity is not everyone becoming the same. Unity is the whole family making room for the gifts, talents, and callings of others, even the ones that look unusual. Some of those gifts are ones many churches never make room for at all, like the ability to see in the spirit, and they belong in the body just as much as the familiar ones.

There is one more thing in the box that matters: the instruction booklet. Try building a Lego set without it and you will probably force pieces into the wrong places and end up with something that does not match the picture.

For the people of God, the instruction booklet is the Word of God. That means the Bible, and it also means what God still speaks to His people today by His Holy Spirit, which is the presence of God living inside every believer. A healthy church does two things with that booklet. First it asks God for the picture, the vision of who He is calling that group to be. Then it asks God how to build it, fitting each person's gifts and calling together so the whole group becomes what He saw.

Daniel Duval teaches that this is how real unity is born. Not by everyone agreeing to think alike, and not by a few strong personalities running everything, but by a group of very different people, each released to be exactly who God made them, fit together by God's own design. The natural result of following the booklet is a build that matches the picture. The natural result of fitting people together God's way is unity and a shared purpose actually getting done.

Now here is where the Lego picture gets interesting, and a little uncomfortable.

When Daniel Duval was a boy, finishing the set was not the end of the fun. After a while of admiring it and playing with it, he would take the whole thing apart, dump the pieces into a giant box with bricks from every other set he owned, and start building things out of his own imagination. That huge mixed box was where the real adventure lived.

The same is true for the church. Once a group of believers reaches the vision God gave it, that vision is not meant to sit there finished forever. A church is not the whole point. It is one piece of something much bigger. God's heart reaches past any single congregation, into whole cities, regions, and nations. Those larger purposes can only be built when believers from many different groups bring their pieces together for something none of them could make alone. The Bible promises that God has dreams for His people that are bigger than anything we have pictured yet.

That is the invitation. God wants to take all these one of a kind pieces, fit them together inside a church, and then join church to church to church until something appears on the earth that the world has never seen. So three things are worth settling in your heart.

First, you are a needed piece. Your gifts were placed in you on purpose, and the church is poorer when you hide them. Stop letting fear, religion, or insecurity train you to reject the very purpose you were made for.

Second, a healthy church does not flatten people. It seeks God's picture and then fits each person's calling together to build it.

Third, God's plans for you are bigger than any one room or building. He has citywide, regionwide, and nationwide purposes that need your piece in the mix.

Often it was learned early, through real wounds, and it does not lift just because you read a true sentence about yourself. That is not weak faith.
