The Three Heavens: What the Bible Means by Heaven

Most people picture heaven as one far-off place in the sky. The Bible actually speaks about heaven in a layered way, and getting this right changes how a person prays and how they understand the spiritual life. Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that Scripture describes three heavens, and that knowing the difference helps a believer see where the real battle happens and, more importantly, where they already sit with Christ.

This is not about charts or strange cosmic maps. It is about reading the Bible plainly and letting it shape everyday faith.

The very first verse of the Bible is more careful than most readers notice.

The word "heavens" is plural on purpose. Many people assume it just means the stars and galaxies. There is more to it. The apostle Paul gives the clearest hint when he describes a man who was taken up into what he calls the "third heaven."

If there is a third heaven, there is a first and a second. Daniel Duval teaches a simple way to hold the three together.

• The first heaven is the sky we can see. This is the everyday world of clouds, birds, and weather. In Genesis, when God made the open expanse, He called it "Heaven" (Genesis 1:8). This is the heaven we live under.
• The second heaven is the unseen realm where spiritual powers operate. This is where opposition gathers, the place the Bible has in mind when it talks about a fight that is not against people.
• The third heaven is where God Himself dwells. It is the place Paul was caught up into, the home of God's throne and His kingdom.

Daniel Duval is careful to say that the exact lines between these are a picture, not a precise blueprint. The point is not to chart the unseen world. The point is to know what the Bible is actually describing when it uses the word heaven, so a believer is not confused about where things happen.

One of the most quoted verses about spiritual struggle places the conflict in the heavenly places, not on the ground.

"Principalities" and "powers" are simply names for spiritual forces that work against people. Notice where Paul says they operate: in the heavenly places, the second heaven. This is one of the most practical things a believer can grasp. When life feels heavy, when a household keeps hitting the same wall, when an addiction or fear will not let go, the source is often not only what can be seen. There is a real struggle going on in a realm the eyes cannot see.

This is not meant to scare anyone. It is the opposite. Knowing where the fight is keeps a person from blaming only the people around them, and it points them toward the right kind of help: prayer that reaches past the surface. Here is the part that changes everything. The Bible does not leave a believer standing on the ground hoping to reach up. It says the opposite. The moment a person trusts Jesus and receives the Holy Spirit, they are lifted to a new position.

The same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus lives in them, so their life is joined to God's realm even while their feet are on the earth.

That changes how prayer feels. A person does not come to God as an outsider shouting up at a closed door. They come as someone already seated at the table, already accepted, already given access. The fight in the second heaven is real, but the believer is not fighting from below it. In Christ, they are seated above it.

When a believer prays "Your kingdom come," they are asking God to bring the reality of His realm into the everyday world. Heaven is not only somewhere a person goes when they die. It is something they are meant to release here, in real situations, by faith.

Every spiritual blessing is already set aside, already paid for, already kept safe in the place where the believer is seated. The blessings are real, and they are not far off. They are stored exactly where the believer already sits.

Understanding the three heavens is not meant to stay in the head. It is meant to reshape how a person walks through an ordinary day.

• When trouble comes, remember the fight is not only against people. Bring it to God in prayer, not just to your own willpower.
• When you feel distant from God, remember where you are seated. You already have access. Come close as someone welcomed, not as a stranger begging in.
• When you pray, pray for heaven to touch earth. Ask God to bring His peace, His healing, and His order into the exact situation in front of you.
