Pre-Adamic Memories or Past Lives? The Real Difference

Some people have said that what Daniel Duval calls pre-Adamic memories are really past lives. In other words, it is reincarnation rebranded with a Christian label. The claim is that he took an old idea, gave it a new name, and handed it back to the church. It is a fair question, and it deserves a clear and honest answer.

If you came here unsettled by something you read or watched, take a breath. You can weigh this for yourself. Here is the plain answer first. Daniel Duval does not teach reincarnation. He has said so in his own words, and in print, calling it a heresy he completely rejects. What he teaches is not the same idea with a new coat of paint. It is a different conversation.

The clearest way to see that is to look at three things in order. What reincarnation actually claims. What Scripture says. And what Daniel actually said.

To know if two things are the same, you first have to know what each one is. Reincarnation, as taught in Eastern religion and the New Age, rests on three pillars.

First, the same soul lives many lives. It dies, then comes back in another body, again and again. Second, karma drives the wheel. The good and bad you did in one life is paid back in the next, so your suffering now is the bill for a past you cannot remember. Third, there is no final judgment. The cycle just turns. You are recycled, never called to account.

Hold those three in mind: many lives, karma, no judgment. The whole accusation rests on the idea that remembering anything from before this life must mean you lived before, as someone else. That is exactly where reincarnation and what Daniel teaches split apart.

The Bible does not leave room for reincarnation. Scripture is not quiet about it. Scripture closes the door on all three pillars at once.

It gives each person one life and one death, followed by judgment, not another body.

One death. One judgment. A wheel of many lives cannot fit through that door.

The Bible has a strong message about stewardship, accountability, and judgment. Karma exists to explain justice in lieu of a God who judges all. The Bible describes God as the judge of the whole earth.

For those who are saved, we will answer to Jesus for how we stewarded our lives. This will determine the eternal reward we receive. This reward will be issued at the judgment seat of Christ.

For those that are not in Christ there will be another judgment called the Great White Throne Judgment. All who are not found written in the Lamb's book of Life will be cast into the lake of fire. People are being delivered to this judgment from holding places, described as Hades, Death, and the sea. Again, the soul being confined to Hades prior to the Great White Throne Judgment reinforces the idea that there is no reincarnation, and therefore no karma.

If Daniel does not teach reincarnation, what is he teaching? The short version: he believes the human spirit is ancient. Not that you lived before as another person, but that your spirit was known and made by God, in Christ, before you were ever conceived. He reads this from verses like the one God spoke to the prophet Jeremiah.

This is his reading of that verse, offered as interpretation, not as settled doctrine the whole church agrees on. And he is careful to separate it from reincarnation by name. In his book Awakened, he writes plainly, "I completely reject the heresy of reincarnation." His point is that the spirit has a history with God that began before this life, yet still lives only one earthly life and faces the one judgment of Hebrews 9:27. Ancient spirit, one life, one judgment. That is not the reincarnation wheel.

Part of why the two get confused is that people blur the soul and the spirit. The Bible describes a person in three parts.

Reincarnation is a claim about the soul, the same soul coming back to live again. What Daniel describes sits in the spirit, the part made in Christ before birth. (For more on these terms, see spirit, soul, and body.) Even on his own terms, the two ideas are not the same category.

This is the honest question underneath the whole thing. If reincarnation is false, why do some people feel like they remember being someone else, somewhere else?

The truth is that the answer sits outside of the scope of this article. The Bible does not explicitly explain why someone that visits a New Age past life regression event may have an experience. Nonetheless, people still want answers for experiences this ministry has no part in creating. While some Christians would rather not try to answer this question, we believe those experiences do have an explanation, and when asked for this explanation, Daniel has offered up his opinions in several podcasts and live Q&A sessions. His answer is a spiritual one, offered pastorally, and developed from attempting to connect the dots on available data and testimony. He has explained that what feels like a past life can be other things: possibly genetic memories passed down from ancestors, or fragments of the soul that have been time-traveled. He has suggested other possibilities as well, always from the posture of opinion and conjecture. These are simply his opinions, not to be misconstrued with biblical doctrines. The point is that these experiences are real to people, and they do not require reincarnation to explain.

Tied up in the confusion between pre-Adamic memories and past lives is the question of pre-Adamic Nephilim. What are they? In deliverance sessions over many years, people have reported memories that involve ancient beings, including what some have described as Nephilim who walked the earth before Adam. This is where readers understandably pause.

Two things are worth saying gently. First, the Nephilim are not an invented idea. The Bible names them.

Second, the specific stories concerning pre-Adamic Nephilim all come from ministry sessions where people report identifying that their spirit has interactions with these beings and report breakthroughs from addressing those interactions in prayer. The reality is that Daniel embraces the gap theory, pointing out that there is an undefined gap of time between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2 where many things happened that the Bible is largely silent on. Pre-Adamic Nephilim would have been one of those silent realities of this gap in time. Is there specific evidence of this assertion in the Bible? No. However, the freedom that has come to those that addressed this is prayer has been substantial. Scripture affirms that Nephilim existed after Adam, and that much is a fact. Are pre-Adamic memories reincarnation with a new name? No. Reincarnation means many lives, karma, and no final judgment. What Daniel Duval teaches is one ancient spirit, one earthly life, and one judgment. Those are not the same claims being explained slightly differently. They are completely different conversations.
