Why Faith Works for One Person and Not Another
Two people can pray almost the same prayer. One of them sees something change. The other sees nothing, and walks away wondering what they did wrong. If God does not play favorites, why does faith seem to work for some people and not for others?
Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that the answer is not really about the words people say. It is about the place those words come from. Faith and the heart are tied together. Faith flows from the heart, and the condition of your heart decides how far that faith can go.
What the Bible Means by "the Heart"
The first thing to clear up is what the word "heart" even means here. In the Bible it is not the organ in your chest, and it is not your feelings. Daniel Duval teaches that the heart is the part of you that sits beneath your everyday thoughts. A simpler word for it is the subconscious: the deep layer of you that holds what you truly believe, often without you noticing.
This is why two people can say the exact same thing and get different results. The conscious mind can repeat a phrase it does not really trust. The heart cannot fake it. Whatever is settled down in that deep place is what shapes the life a person actually lives.
Scripture says it in a single line:
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. (Proverbs 23:7)”
You are not the sum of the thoughts that pass through your head on a hard day. You are what you believe down deep. As Daniel Duval puts it, your mind, will, and emotions belong to you, but your heart is you. That is why the Bible gives this part of us such a strong warning:
“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:23)”
The word "issues" there means borders or outflow. The beliefs sitting in your heart set the edges of what you can receive. They are the riverbanks your whole life runs through.
Why Faith Works for Some and Not for Others
Here is where faith comes in. The Bible defines it plainly:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)”
Daniel Duval describes faith as a kind of substance that gets attached to the words we speak. When that faith is real, the words carry weight in the unseen world. But the strength of that faith does not come from how loud or how often a person says something. It comes from the heart behind the words. The heart is the driving force. Faith is what it launches.
He uses a simple picture to make this clear. Imagine an early hunter who only knows how to throw rocks by hand. He has to be strong, and even then he misses a lot. Now imagine his son invents the bow and arrow. The son does not need a stronger arm. The tool itself launches the same arrow with far more power and aim. A weak arrow from a good bow beats a hard throw every time.
The heart is the bow. When a heart is shaped by God's truth, even small faith gets launched with real power. When a heart is full of doubt, fear, or old lies, a person can strain and strain and still come up short. This is good news for anyone who feels like their faith is weak. The goal is not to squeeze out more effort. The goal is to get the heart aligned with God, so that the faith you do have actually carries.
How the Heart Gets Shaped
If the heart is this important, the obvious question is how it gets shaped in the first place. Daniel Duval teaches that a heart gets programmed, the way beliefs get written into us over time. It happens mainly three ways.
The first is repetition. Hear something enough times, true or false, and the heart starts to accept it as normal. The second is revelation, which is when God writes His truth directly onto a person's heart and it lands deeper than years of trying could reach. The third is harder: deep wounds. Painful experiences, especially early ones, can write a belief into the heart that no amount of "thinking positive" can erase later.
That third path explains something many believers feel and cannot name. A person can know the Bible, agree with it, and still feel unworthy, afraid, or stuck. That is not a sign of weak faith or a lack of trying. It often means a lie got written into the heart through real pain, and it is still sitting underneath, quietly steering things. You can read the right verses all day and still bump into a wall you did not build on purpose.
This is also why sin has more grip than people expect. The things a person feeds on, the constant input from media, addictions, and old habits, keep writing over the heart and crowd out room for God's truth to take hold. The fix is not more willpower. It is changing what gets into that deep place.
Letting God Into the Deep Place
The aim of all of this is closeness. Paul prayed for believers who already followed Jesus that something more would happen in them:
“that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (Ephesians 3:17)”
Notice he prayed this for people who were already saved. He wanted Christ to live not just in their thinking but in that deep, subconscious place where life actually gets steered. That is what it means to let God into the heart.
Faith grows the same way. The Bible says it comes through what we take in: "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). The more a heart is soaked in God's truth, the more faith it can hold and release. When Jesus spoke to a storm and it went still (Mark 4:39), He was showing what words sound like when they come from a heart in perfect agreement with the Father.
For most people, getting the heart aligned is not as simple as deciding to. The beliefs that hold us back were written in deep, sometimes through wounds, and they do not lift just because we know better. That is not a failure. It is a sign that the heart needs gentle, deeper healing, the kind that goes after the root and not just the surface. Bride Movement built a free healing assessment for exactly this. It takes about two minutes, it is private, and it points you toward the right next step.
You do not need more faith than you have. You need a heart that lets the faith you have fly straight.
