If God Feels Distant, Your Earthly Father May Be in the Way
Most people who follow Jesus find it easy to love Jesus. He is the one who died for them. They pray in His name. They sing about Him. But ask them about God the Father, and something changes. The room gets quieter. For many, the Father feels far away, strict, hard to please, maybe even a little dangerous.
Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that this gap is not random. The word "father" never lands on a blank page. It lands on a story. And for a lot of people, that story has pain in it.
Why "Father" Comes With a Lens
Think of what happens when you put on sunglasses. Pink lenses, and the whole world looks pink. Dark lenses, and everything looks dark. You are not seeing what is really there. You are seeing it through whatever is sitting in front of your eyes.
The word "father" works the same way. Before you ever picture God, your mind reaches for the fathers you have known: your own dad, a stepdad, a coach, a grandfather, the men who were supposed to protect and provide. Whatever they were like becomes the lens. If the men in your life were harsh, God looks harsh. If they were absent, God feels absent. If they let you down, you brace for God to let you down too.
This is what Bride Movement calls the father wound. It is the hurt left behind by the people who were meant to father you well and did not. And it does something quiet and costly: it gets in between you and the real Father, so that even when you read about His love, it slides right off.
So here is a fair question to sit with before going further. When you hear the word "father," what is the first feeling that shows up? Whatever that feeling is, that is the lens you are currently reading God through.
What Is the Father's Heart, Really?
The whole question turns on one verse, maybe the most quoted line in the Bible:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)”
Read the order of it. God loved first. The giving came out of the loving. Daniel Duval teaches that this is the key to understanding God at all: the very center of the Father's heart is love. The Bible says it even more plainly in another place, that "God is love" (1 John 4:8). Not that God is loving when He feels like it. That love is what He is made of.
This becomes the lens for everything else. Some people open the Old Testament, see God fierce against the enemies of His people, see Him called jealous, and decide He must be bitter or cold. From there it is a short step to treating Jesus like a "get out of jail free" card, the only reason a hard God would ever accept us. Bride Movement's teaching pushes back on that hard. Every single thing the Bible says about God, in both the Old and the New, has to be read through His love, or it gets read wrong. Any picture of the Father that leaves His love out is simply false. After all, there would be no Jesus without the Father's love. Jesus is the "express image" of the Father (Hebrews 1:3), which means when you look at Jesus, you are looking at exactly what the Father is like.
Did the Father Want Jesus to Die for Me?
This is where it gets personal, and where the wound fights back. The honest thought many people carry is: how could a perfect Father accept me when my own imperfect father rejected me? It feels like a math problem that does not add up. How can someone with all the power in the universe be safe, when the people with hardly any power over me still broke my trust?
So look at what the Bible actually says the Father feels toward you:
“The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:17)”
He sings over you. That is the Father, with real joy, not gritted teeth.
And it goes further than most of us are comfortable with. When Jesus prayed in the garden the night before the cross, He asked the Father if there were any other way (Matthew 26:39). There was not. The Father wanted a way to make you His, permanently, more than even Jesus wanted to carry that pain. You were the reason He was willing to let His own Son be bruised (Isaiah 53:10). Not a distant, reluctant God. A Father who counted you worth everything.
Why the Father Sent Someone Before Jesus
Here is a detail that is easy to skip, and it tells you a lot about the Father's heart. Before Jesus could begin His ministry, someone had to come first to get people ready. That someone was John the Baptist. The Bible says he came to "prepare the way."
What was he preparing? An ancient prophecy gives the answer:
“And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse." (Malachi 4:6)”
Look at what the way-preparing actually was: healing between fathers and children. Daniel Duval teaches that this is no small thing. Before people were ready to receive the Son, they had to be brought back to the Father. The whole rescue plan was built on reconciliation between hearts and the One who made them. The work of Jesus did not happen in spite of the Father's heart. It happened because of it.
If God built reconciliation between fathers and children into the very doorway of the gospel, then your own father wound is not a side issue to God. It sits close to the center of what He came to heal.
When Knowing the Truth Is Not Enough
You can read every line above, agree with all of it, and still feel nothing. That is not a failure of faith, and it is not you being stubborn. It is the lens still doing its work.
Bride Movement teaches that real change happens at the level of the heart. In Daniel Duval's framework, the heart is the deep, mostly hidden part of a person where everything you truly believe actually lives, underneath your day-to-day thoughts. It is the place out of which the rest of your life flows. And here is the catch: the heart does not get rewritten just because your head learned something new. A father wound is written into the heart, often early, often through real hurt. Telling yourself "but God is good" does not erase it any more than reading about food fills an empty stomach.
This is why so many believers stay stuck. The truth about the Father's love is sitting right there in the Bible, and the heart has a wall up that the truth cannot get through. The love of God flows from heaven toward you, but the wound acts like a clogged pipe. The answer is not to try harder to believe. The answer is to let God heal the place the love is supposed to land. Bride Movement walks people through exactly this kind of heart healing, and the Bride Ministries Prayer Library holds free prayers that help open the door.
Part of that healing is honest forgiveness toward the fathers who hurt you, not pretending it did not happen, but choosing to release them so the wound stops governing your view of God. Bride Movement's deeper teaching connects this to a real, deliverable freedom from the long shadow of these old wounds, the kind explored in Iniquity Resolved: The Ultimate Key. And because the Father's love has to flow through a healed inner person to reach you, it helps to understand how God designed the whole of you, body and soul and spirit, to work together, which is laid out in connecting the body, soul, heart, and spirit.
From Orphan to Son or Daughter
When the wall comes down, something shifts in how you pray and how you live. The Bible describes the change like this:
“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." (Romans 8:15)”
"Abba" is the warm, close word a small child uses for a trusted dad. It is the opposite of standing at a distance, hat in hand, hoping not to get yelled at. A person who has received the Father's love stops praying like an orphan begging for scraps and starts coming home like a child who already belongs.
And this changes more than one relationship. The Father feels the same way about all of His children, which is why Bride Movement teaches that His heart is for His people to actually become one. On the night He was betrayed, Jesus prayed for everyone who would ever believe in Him:
“Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. (John 17:11)”
Healing your view of the Father does not just mend things between you and God. It changes how you see everyone else He calls His own. You start to look at other people the way the Father looks at them, and at yourself the way He looks at you.
If the word "father" still carries a sting, that is not the end of your story. It is the exact place the Father wants to meet you. The pain is not a wall keeping you out. It is the door He has been waiting at.
