What Are Principalities? How They Gain Access

Some people fight the same battle for years and never win. They pray. They fast. They get prayer from others. The thing still will not let go. Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that when this happens, the problem is often not a small, low-level spirit. It is something higher up, with a stronger grip and a legal claim that has never been dealt with.

Scripture calls these high-ranking spirits principalities. Before anyone can get free from one, it helps to understand what it actually is, and how it got in. That is what this article covers. The Bible names a whole order of unseen powers. Paul writes:

A principality is a high-ranking fallen spirit. Not a person you can see, and not a low-level demon either. Bride Ministries' teaching draws a sharp line between the two, and the difference changes how a person gets free.

Picture it this way. A low-level demon is a squatter. It has nowhere else to live, so it moves into a person and stays. It wants to take up space. A principality is different. Daniel Duval teaches that these heavenly powers keep their own realm and do not need to live inside a human at all. They interface with a person from a distance, like a hand on a leash, and steer that person's life from the outside.

He uses a plain picture for this. A principality is like a dog walker holding many leashes at once. The dogs go where the walker allows, because the walker holds the cords. One of these powers can hold cords running into thousands or even millions of people at the same time, pulling at each of them, draining each of them, while sitting in its own place far off. That is why this is a different fight than casting out one squatting spirit.

Here is the practical reason the difference matters. When someone tries to treat a principality like a common demon, they swing at the wrong target and get worn out.

Daniel Duval describes it like swatting gnats while a dragon stands behind them, feeding them power. You can bind and rebuke the small spirits all day. As long as the higher power still has its claim and its cords are still attached, the small ones keep drawing strength and keep coming back. Jesus pointed at this order of operations:

The strong man has to be dealt with first. The smaller spirits under it get cleared out after, not before. So the first job is not louder prayer. It is understanding what gave the strong man its claim in the first place.

This is the heart of the matter, and the part most people miss. A principality does not attach to a person at random. There is almost always some kind of agreement underneath it. Something granted it a right.

The agreement can come in several ways:

• A dedication. A person, sometimes an infant or a child, was handed over to a power through a ritual. The child never agreed, yet a parent or authority figure signed them over, and in the unseen realm that still carried weight.
• A bloodline. Some families have carried these ties for generations, passed down like an inheritance no one asked for. A person can be born already connected.
• Trauma. Deep harm cracks something open. Daniel Duval teaches that trauma is one of the most common ways a doorway gets opened in a person's life.

The point is not to assign blame. Many of these doors were opened to a person, not by them. A child cannot consent to what was done in a ritual. A baby does not choose its bloodline. Bride Ministries works with survivors of severe abuse who carry ties they never once agreed to. The point is simply this: there is a claim, and the claim is what holds the thing in place. Until the claim is answered, the power has a legal reason to stay.

This is also why two people can pray the same words and get very different results. The one who finds and cancels the actual claim gets free. The one who only shouts at the spirit, while the claim still stands, does not. What moves it is renouncing the agreement itself.

To see how these powers operate inside a person, you have to understand what Daniel Duval calls the most valuable ground in the unseen world: the human heart.

In Bride Ministries' teaching, the heart is not a feeling. It is the deepest, quietest part of you, the place where your body, your soul, and your spirit all meet. Scripture treats it as the source of everything else in your life:

Jesus told a parable about seed falling on different kinds of ground. He then explained that the ground is the heart, and the seed is His message:

So the heart is ground. It is territory meant to be planted and lived in. God's design is for His life to take root there and grow. But a principality wants that same ground. It moves to occupy the territory of the heart and rule it from the inside.

Scripture says the believer is meant to be God's dwelling place:

Daniel Duval teaches that this same design is what gets hijacked. The human being was made to be a meeting point between the seen and the unseen. That open design is a gift when God fills it. It becomes an injury when a fallen power forces its way in instead, opening doorways and running its influence through them like cords. The thing it is squatting on is not just a behavior. It is space inside you that was always meant for God.

Naming a principality can feel heavy. It can stir up the very pain it has been feeding on. If that is happening as you read this, you do not need to dig through your memory or figure out every detail of what was done to you. You are not being asked to relive it. You are simply being invited to bring an honest, open heart to God and let Him show you what He wants to heal. He is gentle with the deep places, and He does not rush.

And here is the reason understanding the problem matters: a legal claim can be answered. That is the whole hope of this teaching. If a principality only had a foothold because of an agreement, then dealing with the agreement removes the foothold. The grip is not unbreakable. It is legal, and a legal thing can be settled in the highest court there is.
