Fasting for Breakthrough: Why It Works

Fasting for breakthrough humbles the heart and breaks stuck places prayer alone has not moved. See what the Bible shows and how to start.

Why Fasting Breaks Through When Prayer Alone Has Not

You have prayed about it for weeks. You have meant every word. And the wall is still standing. If that is where you are, there is an old practice the Bible keeps pointing to when prayer alone has not moved the thing. It is fasting.

Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that fasting is one of the most powerful and most overlooked tools a believer has. Many people have never heard it taught at all. That gap leaves them missing a piece God built into the life of faith. This is a look at what fasting actually does, why Scripture treats it as a lever for breakthrough, and how to begin without making it harder than it has to be.

What Is Fasting, and Why Does It Matter?

Fasting simply means choosing to go without food for a set time so you can give that space to God. It is not a hunger strike to twist God's arm. It is not a diet. It is a way of saying, with your whole body, that you want Him more than you want comfort.

Bride Ministries teaches fasting as one of three habits that hold a believer together. The Bible pictures it like this:

Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken. (Ecclesiastes 4:12)

A rope made of three strands is hard to snap. Daniel Duval teaches that prayer, giving, and fasting are those three strands. Leave one out, and life starts to fray faster than it should. Fasting is the strand most people drop first, usually because no one ever showed them why it counts.

Jesus did not treat it as optional. When He taught about it, He said "when you fast," not "if you fast."

Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. (Matthew 6:16)

He assumed His followers would do it. That alone is reason enough to take a second look.

What Does Fasting Actually Do?

The first thing fasting does is humble you. Going without food makes you feel how weak the body really is by the middle of the afternoon. That weakness is not the enemy. It is the point. It strips away the sense that you have it all handled, and it makes you more aware of God and what He is doing around you. The psalmist said it plainly:

But as for me, when they were sick, My clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart. (Psalm 35:13)

Humility is not weakness, and it is not putting yourself down. It is honesty about where your real strength comes from. The Bible promises that God lifts up the people who choose it.

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, (1 Peter 5:6)

The second thing fasting does is open a door for breakthrough. Sometimes you pray and pray and nothing seems to move. Daniel Duval teaches that fasting is often the thing that turns that key. The Bible gives two clear pictures of it.

Two Bible Stories Where Fasting Changed Everything

The first is Queen Esther. There was a plot to wipe out the Jewish people, and Esther was the only one positioned to stop it. To do it, she had to walk into the king's throne room uninvited, which by law could cost her life. She did not just go. First she called for a fast.

Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish! (Esther 4:16)

This was a total fast, no food and no water, by a whole community at once. When the three days were over, Esther walked in, the king welcomed her instead of condemning her, and the plot against her people was undone. The fast came first. The breakthrough followed.

The second picture is the prophet Daniel. He spent three weeks in a partial fast, going without rich food, meat, and wine while he sought God for an answer. The answer was already on its way, but it had been held up. An angel finally reached him and explained what had happened behind the scenes.

Then he said to me, "Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me. (Daniel 10:12-13)

There is a lot packed into that. Daniel's prayer was heard on day one. The delay was not God ignoring him. A spiritual enemy, named here as the "prince of Persia," had blocked the answer for twenty-one days until the angel Michael came to break through. Daniel's fasting was part of how that breakthrough came. This is one of the clearest places in the Bible where you see that unseen battle, and where fasting and prayer line up with the help of heaven to win it.

Fasting and Prayer in Spiritual Warfare

There is a moment in the New Testament where Jesus' own followers got stuck. A father brought his son to them so they could set the boy free from a tormenting spirit, and they could not do it. When Jesus came, He freed the boy at once. Afterward His followers asked Him privately why they had failed. He told them their faith was too small, and then He added this:

However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. (Matthew 17:21)

Daniel Duval teaches that this is the missing piece for a lot of believers. Some battles do not bend to a quick prayer. They yield to a life that already has prayer and fasting built into it. Notice that Jesus Himself did not need a three-day fast in that moment. He had already lived a fasted life, including a forty-day fast earlier, and the spirit left on the spot. That is the whole point. Fasting is not a magic word you reach for in an emergency. It is a way of living that leaves you ready when the emergency comes.

The apostle Paul understood this. He listed fasting among the marks of his ministry, right alongside hardship and patience, because going without was simply part of how he walked with God. A fasted life is not about looking holy. It builds spiritual strength the way training builds physical strength, quietly, over time, so the muscle is there when you need it. If you want to go deeper on the unseen fight itself, Bride Movement breaks it down in The Weapons of Our Warfare.

How to Start Fasting Without Overdoing It

You do not have to begin with three days and no water. That is a serious fast, and it is not where a new person should start. Here is a simpler way in.

  • Pick a window, not a marathon. Skip one meal, or fast from breakfast to dinner one day. Give the hunger pangs to God as a prayer instead of pushing them away.
  • Try a partial fast like Daniel's. Step back from rich food, sweets, or meat for a set number of days while you seek God on something specific.
  • Pair it with prayer, always. Fasting without prayer is just being hungry. The two strands work together. Use the time you would have spent eating to pray. The free Bride Ministries Prayer Library gives you words to start with.
  • Have one thing you are believing for. Esther had a nation to save. Daniel had an answer he was waiting on. Name your "why" before you begin.

A quick caution. Fasting from food is not safe for everyone. If you are pregnant, on medication that needs food, managing a health condition, or have a history of disordered eating, talk to a doctor first, or choose a fast from something other than food, like screens or noise, so the principle still works without the risk.

Jesus said a day would come when His followers would fast, longing for more of Him while they wait for the world to be made right.

But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. (Matthew 9:15)

That day is now. Fasting is one of the ways the people of God lean in and ask for more.

For some readers, the wall that will not move is not really about a single prayer or a single fast. It is rooted in old wounds and patterns that go back further than memory, and it does not lift just because you try harder. That is not a lack of faith. It is a sign of something deeper that was never meant to be carried alone. Bride Movement built a free healing assessment for exactly that. It takes about two minutes, it is private, and it points you toward the right next step.
