The Power of the Blood of Jesus: Meaning and Use

There is an old hymn that says, "There is power in the blood." A lot of people sing those words without ever stopping to ask what the power actually is, or how a person is supposed to use it. Daniel Duval, the founder of Bride Ministries, teaches that the blood of Jesus is not a religious symbol to admire from a distance. It is the most important weapon a believer owns, and most people never pick it up.

To understand why the blood carries so much power, you have to understand the problem it was made to solve.

For most people today, the idea of blood and sacrifice feels strange, even disturbing. So why is blood at the center of the whole story?

The answer comes down to life and death. The Bible is direct about what sin produces:

Sin earns death. That is the wage, the paycheck. And death cannot simply be wished away. It has to be answered with its opposite, which is life. So where is life found? Scripture gives one clear answer:

Read that slowly. The life is in the blood. That single line is the key to everything. Wherever sin lets death in, life has to be poured in to push death back out. The word "atonement" in that verse simply means the way a person is made right with God again, the way the gap gets closed. Blood closes the gap because blood carries life, and life is the only thing strong enough to answer death.

This is the pattern God set from the very beginning. After the first sin in the garden, God did not leave the man and woman to cover themselves. He clothed them with animal skins, which meant something had to die (Genesis 3:21). Later, two brothers brought offerings. One brought the fruit of his field, the other brought an animal from his flock. God accepted the blood offering and not the bloodless one (Genesis 4:3-5). The message under all of it never changed. A real cost has to be paid, and the payment is life given through blood.

Animal blood pointed to the answer, but it could never finish the job. The life in an animal was not strong enough to settle the debt of human sin forever. There was only one source of blood that carried enough life to end the problem.

Daniel Duval teaches that the blood of Jesus is in a category all its own because it carries the very life of God. When Jesus poured out His blood, He did not just pay a fine. He gave us access to His own life. That is why the New Testament can say:

The word "redemption" means to be bought back, the way someone might buy back something that was lost or held captive. The price was the blood, and the blood was priceless because of whose life it carried. This is also why communion, the bread and the cup that many churches share, is far more than a ritual. The cup stands for the blood that broke the power of sin and opened the door to the life of God.

Here is where it gets personal, and where the power starts to show up in a person's actual life.

When the blood of Jesus redeems someone, it does not just clear a record. It changes where they belong. Daniel Duval teaches that being born again is a real birth, a spiritual one, into the family of God. And the thing every family shares is a bloodline. The moment a person trusts Jesus, they are brought into God's own family and God's own bloodline. The same life that was in Jesus now runs in them.

This matters enormously for anyone fighting a battle in their mind, their body, or their past. Your standing with God is no longer based on how well you performed last week. It is based on whose blood bought you and whose family you joined. That is an identity nothing in the dark can undo, and it is the ground you fight from.

It also means something about the people next to you. Other believers are not just acquaintances who happen to share your beliefs. By the blood, they are family in the deepest sense. That is one reason division among Christians grieves the heart of God so much. People connected by the same blood were never meant to fight each other.

Most teaching about the blood stops at forgiveness. Daniel Duval teaches that it does not stop there. The blood is also an active weapon for daily spiritual warfare, one of the weapons of our warfare, and Scripture shows believers using it that way.

In Pummel the Devil (Chapter 6), Duval describes the blood of Jesus as one of three witnesses Jesus left in the earth, and he calls it a weapon of deliverance that can be applied over every contract, agreement, oath, or vow that ties a person to darkness. The basis is a verse about what the cross actually accomplished:

There was a record of debt against every person, a list of legal claims the enemy could point to. The blood wiped it out. So when an old agreement, an old habit, or an old wound tries to keep its grip, the believer has legal ground to stand on. The price has already been paid.

There is one more piece, and it is the heart of why the blood is a weapon and not just a memory. The book of Hebrews says the blood of Jesus speaks:

Abel was the brother who was murdered, and the Bible says his blood "cried out" to God for justice. The blood of Jesus speaks too, but it speaks "better things." Where Abel's blood cried out about a wrong done, the blood of Jesus testifies that the price is paid, the case is settled, and the believer belongs to God. This is the same victory described in Revelation:

They overcame. By the blood and by what they said about it out loud. That is the model. The blood is something a believer agrees with and declares, not just something they were told about once.

Daniel Duval teaches a simple, practical habit he calls pleading the blood, and he points out that it is done out loud, because what we speak carries weight in the unseen world.

Pleading the blood is not a magic phrase. It is agreeing, in prayer, with what the blood already accomplished and asking God to apply it over a specific thing. People pray it over themselves, their spouse, their children, their home, their finances, and their day. The picture Daniel often uses is of a wall the enemy slams into face first when he charges. The protection was already purchased; the believer is simply putting it in place.
